Telegraph dispatches report Gen Grant's condition improving while Afghan talks between England and Russia grow serious. Paris markets tumble on fears of war between England and Russia as Russia seeks a war loan. Russian officers on furlough ordered back to regiments.
The Farmers Review reports in its semi monthly crop returns that winter wheat harvests improve enough to settle the outcome, with Michigan alone expected to yield a full crop. Spring wheat shows mixed promise and overall wheat to 330,000,000 bushels, corn and oats trending strong, and outside winter wheat the outlook is encouraging.
A rare singing snake, four feet long with a pug dog shaped head, was captured near the Buck Horn wall on the Baltimore and Ohio line near Deer Park Maryland. It whistles like a mockingbird and jumps like a frog when it sings. The snake was sent to Wood’s Hall in Massachusetts for examination and classification. It differs from African singing snakes and resembles reports of similar snakes in Sumatra. This is the first singing snake recorded in the United States.
Dr. Shrady notes General Grant remains dressed and in good condition with pulse and appetite favorable. He spends the day in his room without pain, and only family will be admitted for now to test ongoing favorable conditions.
Wasuinetos July 3 Mr Hay resigns from the office of First Assistant Postmaster General. The post moves to Mr A E Stevenson a well known Democrat of Central Illinois. The change follows lengthy service and signals a shift in the department leadership.
The office notes the retirement of a long serving, efficient, and agreeable employee who leaned on work to cope with health issues. He notified the President last week of his desire to be relieved and has since remained at the desk only for administrative convenience. Family reports his health is very poor and he cannot attend his desk.
A sewer collapse on Parade street, Hire, buried Victor Fisher up to his hips and left C M Conrad partially buried. Conrad escaped, Fisher was recovered with injuries but survived after Dr Stranahan treated him. Fisher’s condition described as bruised with potential internal injuries.
Workmen have prepared a movable floor in Library Hall for a Mozart Club promenade concert on Monday evening July 20 to benefit the Library. The club lists E. Launtz as director with E R Frew Frank Cole Julius Morrison EB E Linn Marcus Jamieson Louis Miller Thad Reig F Steber Charles Stricker Miss Mary L Turner and others. Mrs W D Hinckley lends support and halls will be decorated by friends of the club.
Burgess C C Thompson has urged a summer grand firemen's day in Warren. He spoke with nearly all local business owners, five opposed. A committee including Thompson, F E Windsor, Cyrus Siegfried, and W C Allen was appointed at a council meeting to solicit subscriptions and report back Friday.
The Springs hotel at Alleghany Spring reports strong occupancy with guests including John Hall of Jamestown Journal and Mrs H A Jamieson and her mother Mrs Hall. Mrs A P Gillmore visits guests of Mrs Jamieson, cottages mostly full, and daily arrivals. Mrs R Taggart stays in a cottage though invalid, recently regaining appetite after water intake. Pro prietors Alessis Dunhams attend to business.
Rich coal lands uncovered in Watson Township on Oct 3 017 owned by Messrs Watson and Dunham. The mine crosses into Limestone township and is believed to be the state’s thickest bituminous vein at five feet. Watson and Dunham plan to work the mine next week. Landowners along the lead are expected to prosper, excluding Col Watson and Myron Dunham.
Mitchell Crowell union in Chattapoy Pennsylvania reports the marriage of telegraphic operator B E Mitchell and Miss Gertie Croeil at the bride’s home on Main street. The couple, married by Rev L M Weaver of Trinity Evangelical Church, left for Buffalo and other destinations after the ceremony.
Governor and state commissioners formally assumed control of the Niagara Falls surroundings under American jurisdiction in a grand ceremony attended by the governor general of Canada and state officials. The event featured a July 14 ball, a noon program with orations by William Dorsheimer and a New York bar member, choral and instrumental performances, a $3,000 fireworks display, and an estimated crowd of over 50,000. A drowning incident marred celebrations when Mrs. McIntyre fell from Goat Island bridge and disappeared into the water.
The Clarendon election of Mutual Gas Company officers last Tuesday evening was marked by strong feeling. Officers chosen include President N. I. Shugert, Vice President Timmons, Treasurer A. H. Simpson, Secretary John O'Neil, Directors two years B. E. Waugaman H. W. Gandy Wm. O'Neil, and Director one year John Japes.

A Fourth of July Salamanca foot race for small prizes grew into a major sporting event after a well built stranger, who could run 100 yards in about 10 seconds, impressed Randolph residents. A plan formed to enter him in the Salamanca race and claim the prize money. The day arrived and the stranger.
A severe storm season leaves Warren and surrounding areas battered by record rains and hail. Flooded cellars and waters, damaged walls at a Market and High streets residence, and extensive orchard and farm losses are reported. Taverns and streets cleaned as towns cope with cloud bursts and fallen infrastructure.
General James A. Beaver fixes the Second Brigade encampment from July 33 to August 1 at Conneaut Lake to be named Camp Gallagher. Regiments must report by July 24 with drills and dress parades daily, details of unit origins and headquarters listed.
The past week in oil markets saw little outside demand and steady to rising prices. Mercantile activity centered in Warren's oil exchange with brokers like Murphy Gartlan and Shamburg active. 150,000 to 200,000 barrels traded daily.
The Harrisburg Patriot asserts that St John faced false Republican accusations of offering to sell out his political trust for money. It cites General Logan and Clarkson admitting attempts to bribe him and argues the God and morality party managers pursued corrupt influence. The piece predicts the truth will emerge and expose GOP tactics.
