Death of S. V. Davis Prominent Warren County figure

The sudden death of S. V. Davis at his High Street home followed a minor hand injury two weeks earlier. Born in 1829, he rose from harnessmaker to county sheriff, leadership roles in the Producers Protective Association, cemetery trusteeship, and the Warren Brick company, with a noted estate and strong Democratic ties. A funeral service was held Thursday at his Fourth Street residence, conducted by the I. O. F. pallbearers included H. A. Jamieson and Chas. Dinsmoor.

Deer Driven Into Barns Amid Severe New York Winter

The bitter New York winter, described as the harshest in forty years, drives deer into farms. In Cameron near Bath, Fred Hathaway found a buck and two does among his cattle while feeding hay. Similar sightings spread through northwestern Pennsylvania, with deer sharing fodder on Potter County farms and at Cherry Springs. Old hunters warn the winter may prove fatal to regional game.

The Warren county W C T U held a mothers meeting at Mrs. Jane Orr’s home on Jan 12 with many young mothers and Y’s in attendance. Miss O B Watson spoke on preparing young women for home making, stressing guidance and character, followed by readings and prayers. North Clarendon union reported lively sessions with talks on reputation versus character and time management, praying for children and street youth, and plans for future meetings and evangelistic work.

Elo Arene Cornplanter of the Allegheny Reserve

A short sketch recounts Elo Arene Cornplanter born about 1800 on the Cornplanter Reservation beside the Allegheny. She, daughter of Chief Cornplanter, was educated by Quaker visitors, read the Bible, embraced Christianity, trained as a Sunday school teacher, studied in Philadelphia four years, returned to uplift her tribe, and died aged a good old age with a marble slab at her grave.

Death of H. K. Siggins in Conewango at 75

H. K. Siggins, an esteemed county resident, died peacefully at his Conewango home last Thursday at age 75. He leaves five sons and four daughters. Funeral services are planned for Saturday at 1 p.m. with interment in Oakland Cemetery.
