Items of Interest From a Century of Oddities and Oddities

A miscellany of curious notes from early 20th century American life mentions how 30,000 of 32,000 Indians in Dakota speak English, Danes shift from sugar imports to beet production, and London grows quieter with widespread pavement. It covers a Detroit couple’s fifty year marriage quarrel, ghost-seance pranks in Terre Haute, early tomato cultivation in Salem, Decorah’s mayor dressing as a girl to deter night miscreants, and a massive cocoa-nut fibre mat at Covent Garden. The piece also ponders prescription ownership after being filled, a Sheridan anecdote about a counterfeit roast, a London advert challenge, tramways, inebriety contagion theory, a Barbadose scene with a divided color identity, the Navajo fire dance explainable by clay body paint, and the death of Rosa Sandor the Hungarian brigand born 1818.
