Generous Siamese Offer to Stock Elephants in America
A Siamese king claimed to donate elephants to the United States to stock an American elephant farm. The elaborate 1859 letter, sent with gifts and a gold sealed envelope, proposed releasing elephants in American forests, using a US ship for transport, and anticipated widespread public curiosity about elephants. The Washington authorities did not accept the offer.
