The Overseer of the Poor of Oxford Township has brought the county’s last surviving slave to the almshouse. Jack, bought in 1810 by Philip Mowrey for 250 dollars, endured a lifelong injury after an accident, refused freedom after emancipation, and after Mowrey’s death his inheritance supported him through two sisters and Senator Mowrey’s line.
