About 15 000 spectators watched Courtney and Conley race Gaudaur and Hosmer with Hosmer favored 2 to 1. Courtney led decisively as his boat posted a remarkable 17 minutes 19 seconds, shattering previous records and signaling a stunning title performance.
August 17 in Pamapgapata reports a blast on the steamer 5. M. Felton after leaving the dock for Wilmington. Over two hundred aboard, mainly women and children, left the wrecked vessel with sixteen injuries. Dynamite suspected, likely placed under the boiler head. only 35 pounds of steam cited. In a brisk note, Cc. M. J. observes that four different locales are selling beer and doing steady business. The speaker jokes that all that remains is a town council and six or eight policemen to stir up fusses and drink sour beer.
Dr W H Say, who advertised oil and tooth extraction free of charge in Warren and nearby towns, was arrested on a complaint of practicing dentistry without a diploma. The case was delayed, with a test by a Bradford arrival and others, as a courtroom dispute over whether tooth pulling requires a diploma. About 13 000 teeth have been pulled in Bradford, Warren, and Clarendon. Knupp Bros. announce price cuts at their blacksmith shop with 3 cent shoeing for new shoes and a veterinary surgeon on site.
The county fair association reports busy preliminaries and grounds improvements. A secretaries office and an octagonal building are under construction, a 390 foot bull ring and a chicken coup are planned. Kimball's running horses from St Clairville will attend, with efforts to obtain Powell Bros. stock from Stoneboro. Exhibits attract wide interest, season tickets priced 1.50, and barley and wheat yields from La Moure show strong potential.
A large stock of furniture of every description at McNett's Furniture Store on Hickory Street will be sold at auction starting Saturday afternoon Aug 22 at 2 o'clock and continuing each afternoon and evening until all goods are disposed of. R Benner a Warren Pennsylvania veterinary surgeon announces he will perform a limited number of surgical operations on animals at the Warren County fair at no charge. Those needing services should notify him at least one week before the fair.
A sweeping world brief reports yellow fever in San Francisco, cholera in Spain with thousands of new cases and deaths, and local deaths in New York and Montreal. Notable obituaries include Edgar P. Apgar in Albany and John A. Guthrie in Pennsylvania.
At a Warren union meeting cigarmakers pledged not to patronize any Warren merchant tailor who refuses to sign the scale of prices set by the tailors union. The newly organized tailors seek a uniform price schedule for pants, coats, and vests, while some manufacturers have not acceded. The move draws interest from former K. of S. members and their allies, the Snakes. Earlier a party from the Cornplanter tribe encountered two enormous black snakes on the Sill Run road near the whortleberry patch.
The Indians dispatched two large rattlesnakes, one nine feet and the other eight and a half feet long, suggesting ancient companionship. The region, once famous for plentiful rattlers, now has few if any, as snakes and their captors recede with civilization.
Over the past week petroleum prices surged with transactions at 1.02 dollars and closing firm at 1.01 bid. New York parties led the advance while Pittsburg and general trade acted as sellers. Forecasts from informed observers suggest prices could reach 1.50 within sixty days as dry hole reports improve. Mercer and Pratt recorded the principal weekly quotations. />

The store offers an extensive tea selection, a large coffee line with a cellar roaster, fresh daily, and a broad range of pure spices plus a premium to every cash buyer.
Hayden Brown of the lower town section was badly hurt last Monday morning while removing a large iron tank for the D A V P company. A pole used as a lever slipped, the pole struck the back of his head and knocked him senseless. He was moved home near the gas works for care. Doctors feared skull fracture or severe concussion, but late reports say he is improving rapidly.
The Grant monument committee in Riverside Park New York reports only 43000 collected by Wednesday amid broad discouragement. The World and other New York papers show little interest and aid remains confined to the city as national mourning lingers.
Daniel Stroup, a prosperous Columbia N. farmer and cheese factory patron, was caught watering his milk. The association imposed a fine of 500 dollars.
The cornerstone ceremony for the new Methodist church was held last Tuesday with Rev. Peate of Jamestown delivering a thoughtful address on Christianity and progress. A copper box with religious texts and church records was sealed beside the stone as Rev. Peate and Rev. Painter presided, and the crowd heard music before benediction. The building is expected to be a grand, costly edifice funded by generous subscriptions.
Firemen's Day events are set for Tuesday with the Exchange Hook and Ladder and Niagara Hose companies hosting visiting brigades at local hotels. Struthers Hose will entertain Johnson Hose of Bradford, and Barker Hose of Fredonia is hosted by Niagara at the Revere House with others banqueting at their rooms. The day features a printed program, 5 p.m. banquets, and a grand ball to cap the festivities funded by over one thousand dollars from citizens.
