Congress Meets In Special Session Over Silver Policy

In Washington on Aug 7, 1893 the new Congress convened in special session. Speaker Crisp was elected, sworn in, and key officers were named. President Cleveland urged repeal of the 1890 silver purchase law and warned that continued silver purchases threaten gold reserves and currency stability. He urged rapid tariff reform and monetary policy to restore confidence.
