The Mysterious Loss of the Hope Brig
In 1857 the brig Hope sailed from Sydney to Liverpool, later found wrecked near Kerguelen Island. James King, a convict turned millionaire, owned her. a crew and passengers faced mutiny fears. An official 1859 expedition aboard the Rambler located wreckage on an east coast inlet and found a castaway, Thomas Beckett, later drowned, with evidence tying the boat to the Hope. The case, though, lingered in court.
