Allied forces under Pershing press advance of about three miles on the Aisne Marne front after a thirteen day German drive. Lull persists on the Picardy and Flanders fronts as the situation appears more favorable for the Allies today.
American Marines and German forces clash in open battle described as historic by witnesses. Reported firing from concealed positions behind trees and rocks with machine guns involved and claimed captures noted.
American Marines extend gains near Chateau Thierry on June 7 advancing about two and a half miles along a six mile front. They capture several villages and 300 prisoners with none taken prisoner. Fierce fighting at a railway station included heavy machine gun fire and noted enemy losses. Bouresches village was seized by Marines who prior fought in Haiti. a new corporal assumed command after officers fell. Continued on page.
Berne reports the German annexationist press cites Andre Tardieu after his return to France to outline Americas vast war preparations. The papers warn Germans to prepare to meet the American war measures described to the press.
Amsterdam June 8 reports Ensign Eaton of Springfield Massachusetts descended at Texel Holland during a flight and was interned. He is the first American soldier to be interned in Holland. Texel is the largest island in the Frisian group on the Dutch coast.
Mrs Finley J Shepard formerly Miss Helen Gould is seriously ill at her home in New York and may require an operation. She is noted for her philanthropies.
Despite official statements that the submarine danger is contained navigation suffers from U boat presence. No submarines have been captured or sunk, but the menace remains a serious concern for shipping and seaborne commerce.
Reports from June 8 indicate German U boats operate near the Atlantic coast with no sinkings yet. Sightings occur near Florida and Biddeford as authorities detain a German suspect, Mritz Flage, with maps and plans tied to coast defenses and ship routes.
A woman recently returned from Germany told President Wilson what she described as the conditions within the central powers. Wilson listened as she recounted what she said are present German demands and terms.
A French liaison officer with American forces reports a German attempt to turn American positions in Veilly wood on the Marne front ended in disaster. President Wilson acts to prevent a threatened strike by commercial telegraphers and to hasten settlement of labor disputes. He summoned Secretary of Labor Wilson for a Saturday conference to curb war work disruptions and avert nationwide disruption to rail and streetcar services. Chicago organizers promise support if a strike proceeds, with rail telegraphers joining to assist.
London reports that Russia will implement conscription with general mobilization of workers and peasants. The All-Russian central executive committee ordered draft plans for Moscow Petrograd Don and Kuban regions due to food shortages and counter revolution pressures.
Washington reports official confirmation that Lieut. Wm. J. Flannery of Pittsburgh received the Croix De Guerre from France for bravery on June 3. He swam the Marne to rescue a wounded French soldier and was decorated on June 5.

Reports cite Secretary Lansing’s reply over the release of Captain Lieut. Franz Rinteln and note no anticipated reprisals. Speedy trials urged for spy suspects in New York with possible death or long prison terms. An Atlantic port vessel returning with foodstuffs reports a German submarine encounter.

Henry Astor, long isolated from the main Astor lineage after marrying his father's gardener’s daughter, died today at his West Copack country home. He was 97.
Twenty thousand school children led by Gov Cox buried the Kaiser in Cleveland Ohio on Thrift Day. The coffin was carried to the public square and the lid was nailed shut by Governor Cox ending the ceremony.
A world record was set when the Tra shipping Company of Savannah Georgia laid a new keel ninety seconds after a ship left the ways. Chairman Hurley of the Shipping Board telegraphed congratulations. Washington forecast notes slightly warmer tonight and Saturday.
Paris dispatch reports Franco American forces driving two and a half miles along a six mile front from the Paris Chautau Thierry road, stout German counterattacks repulsed, Allied gains extended toward the Ourcq and Marne sectors as French and American units push forward with valor.
Dr. J Livingston Wilgus, a Chicago physician, his wife, and daughter were killed when Michigan Central train 14 crashed into their automobile at Sandy Beach near New Buffalo Michigan. Mrs Wilgus and the daughter died instantly while he survived over an hour.
London June 8. Many women as well as scientists engineers and munitions directors have been decorated by King George with the Order of the British Empire. Notables include Viscountess Harcourt honorary secretary to the Woman's War Relief Fund and Sir Charles Blair Gordon.
Paris reports Otto H. Kahn of New York banker currently in France sent a 2000 dollar check to Pierre Wolff president of the French dramatic society aiding their efforts.
Washington June 8 A proposal to abandon the postal zoning system in favor of a straight tax on advertising was laid before the House ways and means committee by Representative Albert Johnson. He urged a graduated tax on advertising based on newspaper circulation to cover transportation costs in the second class mails.
