Allied troops under General Foch push advance from advance to four miles, taking thousands of prisoners as they relieve pressure south of Rheims. German lines near Est to Epernay repulsed, with efforts to enter wooded mountains south of the objective city defeated at Nanteuil la Fosse.
German forces report small advances near Rheims while sustaining enormous casualties. French American and Italian units counterattacked vigorously, inflicting heavy losses and preserving allied gains in the region.
London dispatch reports French and possibly American counterattacks between Soissons and Chateau-Thierry as Germans press south of the Marne aiming to seize the Epernay Rheims corridor. German gains total six miles toward Epernay with mixed progress near St. Agnan and Courton wood while French extend lines east of Rheims and retake Mont Voisin and Chene La Reine. In the U.S. Becker Steel Co. assets are to be nationalized to Americanize high speed steelmaking under Palmer.
London reports a Franco American counter offensive between the Aisne and Marne rivers driving forward several miles. The drive aimed to cut the Soissons Rheims railway and force back German forces, capturing thousands of prisoners and twenty guns. Mosquito tanks supported infantry as machine guns mowed down resisting troops.
Frank Charlton reports the Allies launch a wide counter drive along a 30 mile front from Fontenoy to Belleau Wood as Americans join in near the Aisne and Marne. Franco American forces gain ground quickly, challenging German artillery advantage and aiming to ease pressure on Rheims. Paris July 18 The North German Gazette decries American successes on the Marne claiming the Americans cannot train enough men to reach the front in time. A Swiss source reports the Frankfurter Zeitung says the offensive aim is to strangle Rheims.
Washington reports the American lines near Vaux held firm as enemy attempts to penetrate were broken by infantry and artillery. Pershing's communique notes Americans regaining the south bank of the Marne and describes counter attacks that trapped and captured several German troops.
A wild cheering demonstration erupted on the New York Stock Exchange as press dispatches reported American and French forces breaking through the German line between Chateau Thierry and Soissons and capturing several towns. The on-floor celebration lasted minutes and echoed through the financial district.
Paris dispatch describes American troops at the Marne front after the first shock of fighting. A Kentucky doughboy recalls a sergeant picking off 25 Germans as they crossed the Marne. Reports tell of German trains sunk, a Polish private’s unit engaging machine guns, and Americans disguising as foes then killing eight Germans. A Louisiana soldier and a Philadelphian narrowly escaped shell fire.
Geneva July 18 Berlin dispatch quotes the Kaiser thanking Secretary Roedern for approving a new German war credit. He says the vote proves the nation backs the army and Germany will be invincible if it stays conscious of its strength and faith in God.
Saratoga Springs July 18 Attorney Merton J. Lewis injured in an automobile accident is reported resting well. His physician said he may be out of bed tomorrow though his candidacy plans have not been halted.
Washington weather bulletin notes partly cloudy conditions tonight, followed by a Friday of fair skies. Temperatures rise slightly with warmer air expected across the region.
Frisco passenger train No. 105 derailed at Sickinger Missouri at 4 14 this morning en route from Kansas City to Memphis Birmingham Alabama. Engineer and fireman reported missing and 15 to 20 passengers injured. Engine baggage and mail cars overturned. a chair car and sleeper left the rails.
The Earl of Reading British Ambassador called at the War Department to inform Gen. Peyton C. March chief of staff that King George had conferred upon him the Knight of the Grand Cross and the Order of St. Michael and St. George. A cable from the British secretary of war followed confirming the decorations.
Hoover reports to the President that the United States supplied 2 011 100 000 pounds of meat and fats and 340 300 000 bushels of cereals this year to Allies and civilian populations. Exports rose despite a smaller grain crop with wheat exports up and meats and fats increased.
Gen. John J. Pershing reports Lieut. Quentin Roosevelt is missing after a July 14 mission with twelve planes near a photographic section. Roosevelt replies gratitude and suspense as he heads to Saratoga to address the upstate Republican convention.
