President Wilson would take control of telephone and telegraph networks once Congress authorizes. Burleson named administrator of communication systems. Aswell resolution faces strong opposition. Cabinet members Daniels Baker and Burleson urged swift action as wartime necessity.
London July 2 The Times today shows British casualties for the past week totaling 704 officers and 28,193 other ranks. The figure marks a heavy toll for the recent fighting and reflects sustained combat losses.
Washington dispatched Pershing's July 1 communique via the War Department noting continued American control in patrols and air combat. It cites a patrol that seized thirty prisoners and reports reduced enemy activity in Picardy with lighter artillery and increased risky aerial operations.

Washington July 2 The Belgian steamship Chilear was sunk by shell fire from a German submarine 1400 miles off the coast on June 21. Twenty five survivors were picked up by a sailing vessel four days later. The vessel was of 2966 gross tons.

Paris July 2 France and Greece signed an agreement allowing citizens of each country residing in the other to be enrolled in the respective armies. The pact was learned today by The Agenze Radio.
Washington July 2 The Senate passed Senator Kings bill repealing the act granting a charter to the German American Alliance. The bill has not yet been taken up by the House. Forecast notes fair tonight and warmer. Wednesday looks fair and warmer.
American forces on the Picardy front near Marne report a daring night raid at Chateau Jenks Park. Thirty three Germans captured including one officer after being encircled by eighty five Americans with heavy bombardment. Casualties were heavy for the Germans and American losses were trifling.
Washington notes Provost Marshal General Crowder clarifies the work or fight regulation. He stresses every man’s duty to support the war by labor and explains the rule targets men aged 21 to 36 liable under the selective service law, including those in classes II III and EU who are not in effective industry.
The ministry of munitions reports 60 to 70 killed in a Midlands shell filling factory explosion last night. Wounded count is unknown. A large portion of the plant survived and work will resume in a few days. Women workers behaved admirably and were allowed to return to work. Sufficient reserves prevent output loss.
