In two New England manufacturing cities a large strike and lockout have left about twenty eight thousand workers idle. The mobility of labor and the impact on major industrial centers are examined as the action disrupts production and raises questions of wartime economic management.
Twenty eight thousand textile workers in Manchester New Hampshire Lowell Massachusetts and nearby areas walked out or were locked out today amid wage demands. The Stark Mills Amogkeag Company and related plants posted closures cutting orders and threatening further job losses. If the strike widens hundreds of thousands of dollars in orders including war material are at risk.
Washington July 1 The president reviewed all data about a planned strike of Western Union Telegraph Company union telegraphers set for a week from today. No decision was announced on possible actions. Officials expect steps but the lines are not yet known. The move may involve cooperation with the labor department as it works to avert trouble. Support from railway telegraphers adds to the situation's complexity.

General Pershing's June 30 communique reports heightened artillery fire on both sides in the Chateau Thierry area with notable German air activity. It notes lighter German artillery overall, limited gas and shrapnel use, isolated enemy patrol clashes, and increased enemy activity south of the Marne with continued German air presence along the front.
On the Toul front two American airmen Lieut. E. R. Hazett and Lieut. S. W. Thompson clashed with three German aircraft at about 1000 feet. They maneuvered to rout the Germans after a brief dogfight, both American planes were damaged but they completed their patrol. German snipers on the Marne front suffer heavy losses due to American marksmanship.
London July 1 The eve of the Fourth finds Londoners facing a serious shortage of American flags, perhaps fewer than flagpoles. Citizens plan to mark the holiday with celebrations similar to those in U S towns, hoping to display stars and stripes despite the scarcity.
Army high command in Berlin shows anxiety over U S involvement and future role as Americans reach the front in France. Berlin hides American troops while raiders probe line from Luneville to the Swiss frontier. Americans now occupy about seventy miles of western front under Allied coordination as some French units fight under American command. Germans attempt fraternizing with U S troops, sending kitten taunts and package prénadés into trenches amid tension and propaganda.
London July 1 The hospital ship Llandovery Castle was torpedoed and sunk in June returning from Canada with 165 officers and men 80 Canadian medical attendants and 14 women nurses aboard only 24 survivors have been picked up from a crew of 259 with potential more found The ship was attacked 116 miles southwest of Fastmet at 10 30 on the night of the 27 and sank in ten minutes.
