Reported German forces press toward the east bank areas of the Canal Du Nord and the Somme River. Officials debate whether a temporary stand will be attempted, with resolution expected within twenty four hours.
British and American forces report gains on the Picardy front with towns Hardecourt and Fouler seized and trenches dugouts captured. Allied totals reach about 120000 prisoners and 2000 guns since mid July as Gen. Pershing notes 200 prisoners taken west of Juvigny and detachments withdrawn in Bazoches and Fismes.

Washington August 29 double dealing in amendments to the administration water power bill is charged in a letter to President Wilson by Chairman Themas Sims of the House Water Power Committee. The letter and Wilsons reply were read during debate. Sims asked if the amendments had administration approval. the President emphatically denied any such approval. Wilson said he did not see the draft and preferred passing the original form. The Merrill named is O C Merrill chief engineer of the Forestry Bureau who delivered the amendments with letters signed by Baker Lane and Houston. Wilsons letter signals a likely policy shift toward Federal development of water power resources.
