British and Allied forces advance on both sides of the Avre River as Roye Chaulnes and twenty eight other towns are recaptured from German control in the last twenty four hours. Strong movements signal a widening push on German defenses across northern France.
Allied forces under Gen Foch advance along the Avre line and push toward the Somme with rapid gains. French and Mangin's tenth army report multiple towns recaptured, including Roye Chaulnes and Foucacourt. British units reach the Cambrai road near Haucourt Remy and Boiry Notre Dame. Crossings of the Somme are under bombardment as Germans retreat to Noyon sector.
Paris Aug. 8. Huge German forces face disaster as French troops under Mangin and Debeney push toward Royse Chaulnes and the Somme. The vanguard reaches the river while infantry and artillery press every point. German crossings are under French fire, retirement from Lassigny harried by a long-range barrage.
London reports a major Allied push north of the Somme with British forces taking Trones wood and Foucacourt while advancing along the Arras Cambrai road. The war office notes gains north and south of the Avre with villages retaken and a twelve kilometer advance in parts.

A dispatch from Kiev reports 200 Constituent Assemblymen at Samara forming a directorate government led by Stepanoff with the Cadet party and General Alexeev.
Nogales, Aug. 19. An incident near the international line left two Americans dead and 29 wounded after clashes with Mexican forces. Commandante Abasola blamed border guard tensions and illegal immigration procedures. An American commander from San Antonio arrives with reinforcements to restore order. The battle involved about 3090 Americans and locals. a military court investigates the incident.
American troops repulsed a German assault on Filmette near Baroches after a daybreak push. The line held as Americans gained ground toward Bazoches with over fifty prisoners taken, two officers among them, despite heavy German artillery and bayonet fighting by the 17th Prussian Guards.
British forces advance on Bapaume amid reports the town is deserted. Canadian troops secure gains as Allied position tightens, with occupation possible at any time.
French troops capture Chavigny and advance toward Juvigny as British units move within six to seven miles of Peronne. Canadian troops seize Cherisy Visen Artois and Bois De Sart while Croisilles and Fonatine Lez Croissilles are encircled. Fouecourt falls as British pressure tightens south of the Somme.

Zurich August 28 Dr William Solf German colonial secretary and former Governor of German Samoa may succeed Count von Hertling as Imperial Chancellor according to a Berlin report. Solf is a leading member of Germanys Western School of political thought and could signal a move toward peace negotiations or an end to the war.
