Famous Mine La Motte Prospected Again in Missouri
The Mine LaMotte property in Madison County Missouri once again drew interest from the St Joseph Lead Co with six diamond drills to test the lead bearing area. The site, famed for shallow disseminated lead, has 10 shafts reaching 76 to 170 feet, and while historically productive it produced 4000 tons of pig iron per year with profits of 50 to 60 thousand dollars during Hazard era. Subsequent owners pursued large scale operations, failed to connect rail access and abandoned plans to strip 50 to 100 foot barren limestone, while cobalt nickel and copper appeared in underlayers but yielded no commercial success. The property remains idle but worth watching for potential re opening.
