The old air operated hoist at the White Raise shaft is worn out and to be replaced by a larger electric hoist. The plan calls for a 150 HP unit with 6000 lb rope pull, 800 to 550 ft per min rope speed, 2200 volt three phase drive, and a special electric braking system.
A drift at the Success mine on virgin ground near the main tunnel face has yielded over three feet of lead-silver ore with high grade streaks. The shoot widens as the drift progresses, with minimal zinc encountered. Combined with favorable 1400 and 1600 level shows and high lead prices, the outlook favors resumed production at the historic mine.
A wave of Republican candidates for county offices signals a strong one sided race this fall in Shoshone County. With current officials seeking reelection and several newcomers declaring, Republicans appear poised to dominate the primary and likely the November election. One Democrat, Hugh McGillis, has entered the sheriff race with no other challengers yet reported.

A high grade streak persists, with 3 to 5 feet widths and an 660 foot tunnel level depth promising a large commercial ore block.
Mine inspector Campbell spent two weeks in the Coeur d Alene district and will inspect the Armstead mine near Sandpoint and other properties in Bonner County. He plans to visit Cartbon County oil fields and may attend the August Republican convention in Wallace. He praised Bunker Hill & Sullivan, Morning, Hecla, Lookout Mountain, Pine Creek Milling, Western Union, Independence, and North Bunker Hill for development and safety efforts.
The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered a nationwide freight rate reduction effective July 1, with the Northwest facing a 12 percent cut. Ore shipments are expected to benefit, possibly reviving idle mines as higher lead prices spark renewed production and hope for resumed operations at Tamarack and Hercules smelters amid ongoing negotiations for ore treatment contracts. Labor and business conditions brighten as mining activity picks up and demand grows.
Big It Mining & Milling company stockholders will meet on June 5 to elect directors for the new year. The meeting occurs at the mine on Pine creek. Development work has progressed steadily with encouraging results. M. L. Pratt leads operations and says directors will keep work ahead and open the vein from the tower crosscut this summer.
