Wallace Fourth Draws Big Crowd At Independence Day

Wallace celebrated the 144th anniversary with a Grand Theater program led by Mayor Mutch Toole and speakers including Donald A Callahan. The day featured patriotic exercises, a Declaration reading, and an audience singalong. A major ball game for a $300 purse drew the largest crowd, won by Mullan 9 to 7 after Wallace was eliminated earlier. An airplane exhibition was canceled but not blamed on organizers.

Big Creek Injunction Heard Over Tailings Threat

John A Percival president of Interstate Callahan Mining company dies of heart failure at his summer home near Bridgeport Connecticut. He had led the firm about six years and recently moved to Chicago Boston operations. Burial set for St Albans Vermont with company directors meeting in New York to elect a successor.

Gold Hero Medals Awarded to Mullan Miners

Gold Hero Medals will be awarded to James Collins and James Dilimark of Mullan for rescuing two entombed miners at the Gold Hunter mine. They endured a cave in and were buried to the shoulders while a seven day drill supplied food and water. The ceremony is set for the international mining safety congress in Denver, with Dr. Frederick G. Cottrell presiding.

Callahan fuels Coeur d'Alene Canning growth plan

The Coeur d Alene Canning Company, backed by James Callahan of Wallace and wealthy Wallace mining interests, undertakes a major expansion to convert a former brewery into a modern canning plant. The facility now produces canned fruits and vegetables, vinegar, and cider with plans for expanded lines while contracting grower crops and marketing through eastern brokers.

Monarch Mine High Grade Ore Shipments Reported

Leasers on the Monarch mine near Murray ship high grade ore to the Bunker Hill area via Fidelity Co. The 38.6 ton lot yields 8.6 percent lead, 9 percent silver and 104 percent zinc, netting $2,055.19. An additional 15.8 ton shipment contains 66 percent lead and 78 ounces silver, netting $2,352.46. Two leasing concerns operate below and above the Monarch, with activity centered around an ore shoot 400 feet higher.

Lookout Pass Road To Be Built Five Mile Cutoff

Commissioners confer with Mineral County and favor the Lookout Pass route. W J Hall and state highway engineer Hassett review plans for a five mile road on a six percent grade from Lookout pass to Willow Creek, with funding from county state and forest service. The project aims to ease transcontinental travel and boost the Yellowstone trail, with a summit meeting planned this fall.
