Future of mining in Coeur d Alenes

The Coeur d Alene district shows quiet business with two mines closed, about 450 workers idle, yet 2500 employed at producing mines and 500 in leasing and development. A $1,000,000 zinc refining plant by Bunker Hill & Sullivan is planned, boosting local zinc demand and cutting freight costs. Congress is expected to pass a protective tariff on lead and zinc, stabilizing the U.S. market after wartime disruption and Mexican production declines.

The raise from the lower tunnel has extended over 60 feet with galena in evidence and the top of the raise impregnated with lead-silver ore.
