Lead and Zinc Output Rose in 1922 Despite Price Rise

The United States Geological Survey reports 1922 mine output for lead rose in both lead and zinc, with zinc up about 70 percent from 1921. Domestic smelter and refinery production climbed, while zinc and lead prices surged through the year, and pigment use boosted exports. Major producing districts include MississippI valley, Coeur d'Alene, Utah, Oklahoma, and Montana Butte.

Bauxite Production Surges in 1922 Across United States

The 1922 domestic bauxite output is at least double 1921 and may total not less than 300 000 long tons, driven by rising demand from abrasives industries. Arkansas and eastern fields saw larger operations, though fall car shortages constrained output. Imports averaged 3500 tons monthly in early 1922, then stayed above 3000 tons after June. Prices ranged 6 to 10 dollars per ton for dried bauxite, 12 to 15 for pulverized, and 20 to 25 for calcined. Tariff rises to 10 dollars per ton affected calcined bauxite, replacing the prior free-list status.

Imports of Platinum Show Increase in 1922

During the first nine months of 1922 imports of crude and unmanufactured platinum reached 72,410 ounces, about 11,000 ounces more than all of 1921. Colombia supplied roughly half the crude platinum, with additional metal coming through England and other countries. Domestic supply remains import dependent, suggesting higher metal recovery by refiners. Stocks began the year at 64,547 ounces, and jewelers’ stronger 1922 results imply recovery could reach 60,000 ounces. James M. Hill of the U.S. Geological Survey estimates about 200,000 ounces of platinum metals were available for consumption in 1922.

Alaska engineer from Chickaloon visits Boise home

Warren G. Fenton, 11 years in Alaska mining, says transportation is Alaska's main problem. He notes high production costs limit coal use, cites world fuel potential, and explains the 500 mile Seward to Fairbanks railroad plus 125 mile Cordova to Kennecott line as main routes. He stresses need for feeder routes to develop interior combined with rich copper at Kennecott and low grade placer reefs too distant from rail.
