Electric furnace at San Francisco Mint changes coinage process
The U S mint began operating a Ronnerfelt electric furnace on November 9 to melt cupro nickel and bronze for nickel and cent coins. The two phase 60 cycle supply delivers about 110 volts to the furnace with 650 to 500 amperes, using carbon electrodes and a water cooled holder. The process includes charging scrap metals and ingots, pouring into steel molds, quenching, and rolling into coin blanks. A slow conveyor will later replace hand handling to time pouring, quenching, and cropping.
