Senator W E Borah delivered the keynote address at Kellogg's twentieth annual miners and smeltermens picnic held August 11 and 12. The festival drew visitors from across the district, impressed with crowd control and program execution, and praised by Industrial Union leaders for fostering employer employee harmony.
Arctic Mining president Henry Lalonde announces resumed development of the Placer Creek property about five miles up the creek adjoining Vienna International. A directors meeting has been called to arrange financing plans for the company.
Senator W. E. Borah will visit Wallace for a speech at the Grand theater after engagements in Moscow and Kellogg. He has spoken across northern Idaho counties, and locals hope for a definite date soon.
Hecla Mining announces a quarterly dividend of 15 cents per share totaling 150 000 dollars for stockholders of record Sept 1, payable Sept 15. This brings year to date payments to 900 000 dollars and total disbursements to 10,855,000. The smaller-than-expected 15 cent per share dividend reflects conservative management amid fire damage and ongoing insurance discussions for a 1 000 000 policy.
Sunshine Mining Company reports ore extraction reaching 40 feet high and 70 feet long in the stopes with ore widths of 12 to 15 feet. A five foot seam of clean lead-silver and gray copper lies in the west end. Ongoing development and shipments sustain the mill, with plans to start sinking soon under R. S. Merriam, the city mining engineer.
A Wallace Miner letter from M. H. Sullivan, superintendent of the Bunker Hill smelter at Kellogg, Idaho, rebuts claims about platinum recovery and enlarging facilities. He states no platinum is recovered, no business with Goldsmith Bros. of San Francisco, and invites visitors to inspect the plant. The item also covers Federal Mining & Smelting Co. activities in British Columbia and Idaho, including Fairview, Dome Mountain, and Hudson Bay mountain properties and recent ore shipments.
Reports from the Amazon-Dixie mine say the drift on the 1500 level is within the Leslie ground but still far from the big Leslie out crop where the main ore body is expected. Thin drift has yielded lead-silver and copper ore likely enough to justify a small mill, though no mill will be considered until Leslie ground exploration finishes and ore volume supports a large-capacity plant.
John Korg of New York, president of the Callahan Zinc ore company, arrived last Saturday for a stay through the month. He comes with Mrs. Bors and his two children and will oversee development work at the Callahan mine and the Galena while enjoying the Coeur d'Alenes mountains during Winstay.
Four thousand tons of silver lead ore will be received at the Bunker Hill smelter from Mayo district Yukon. The first trainload arrived this week and shipments move by river sea and rail via Stewart River to Seward then Seattle. Ore is to be sampled on arrival and a 1.5 cent per pound duty paid to the government.
Structural steel for Hecla’s main buildings will come from Granby Smelting and Refining’s Grand Forks works, abandoned in 1919. Jax F McCarthy and KE Wood report the steel is in excellent condition and will cut construction time and cost. Dismantling and transport are underway as foundations and retaining walls progress. Water in the mine is being lowered at a steady rate, with pumping capacity increased to speed unwatering and resume production within six months after the July 13 fire.
W F Newton, Lincoln Mining manager, directs Silverado development below Osburn with a 2000 foot tunnel exposing ore in the Polaris vein. A 100 ton flotation mill formerly operated but proved unprofitable. Newton, long in charge of Yankee Boy on Big Creek, believes the Yankee Boy vein runs through Silverado about 300 feet south of Polaris as workers crosscut the main tunnel.
Edwin Roberts, manager of the C and R Mining, reports from the extension of the crosscut south a vein 12 or 14 feet wide in quartzite with galena throughout the width. Drifting has begun east, and a tunnel about 700 feet above current work shows lead carbonate ore valuable in silver. The showing and future development promise a favorable outlook for C and R.
