Rate decision preserves Idaho smelter advantage
The Interstate Commerce Commission ruled that smelter product rates from Bradley Idaho to eastern markets stay the same as Montana and Utah, despite longer westward hauls. The decision favors Bunker Hill and Northport smelters, with Northport now out of business, and upholds a wartime blanket rate that Montana and Utah interests had challenged for years. Commissioner dissenters argued the ruling harms local industries by benefiting distant competitors.

Lead Price Drops Prompt Market Debate
The Eastern authority notes a drop from 8.25 to 8 cents in lead last week, sparking concerns of further decline. The Engineering and Mining Journal-Press analyzes the week ending April 18, saying American Smelting contract price remains 8.26c, with weak demand but active consumers, while European markets like London show discounts and imports from Spain. The St Louis market also weakens with most sales around 8c and some buyers at 8.10c, reflecting a wide gap between potential large-tonnage import prices and small-business transactions.
