Remarkable Waterspouts Observed Off New South Wales
An American engineer aboard a schooner off the coast of New South Wales made a rare scientific observation of waterspouts. Fourteen complete spouts formed as he used a theodolite to measure them. The largest spout comprised two inverted cones connected by a pipe spout. The upper cone’s peak stood about 5,014 feet above the sea, each cone about 100 feet in diameter at the base and about 250 feet long, with a 4,500 foot spout length between them.
