Kitty Gray, a newspaper woman, finds half a broken coin in a curio shop. At her editor's order she travels to Gretzhoffen to unravel the inscription’s mystery. She is followed as her adventures unfold chasing the coin’s secret.
In a tense stand off Count Frederick pleads for the coin while Kitty Gray refuses to yield. She taunts him and asserts the people own the prize, hinting at liberty and justice as motives beyond mere possession. A hidden tile portrait falls from his coat, revealing a renewed conflict over ownership and power.
Police and gendarmes seal the Ritz hotel as a murder scare erupts over the Gretzhoffen coin plot. A young American woman, Miss Gray, is linked to the crime through her frequent mysterious comings and goings with her companion. Count Frederick of Gretzhoffen is suspected after a prior visit, as investigators cordon exits and question hotel staff to locate the victim and the missing American.
As gendarmes close in on Count Frederick and Kitty at the Ritz, Roleau signals for a carriage and engineers a quick escape plan. The pursuit narrows to the palace corridors and the stair, where Roleau reappears with a mystery companion just as the officers near the crime scene.
Rolean finds a dead man in Kitty Gray’s rooms and ambushes Blake the renegade. The prefect questions the captors as Rolean claims Blake is the killer and leads a tense confrontation amid suspicions of Kitty Gray. The room appears empty when the door opens. TO BE CONTINUED A
