Legion to Observe Memorial Day Activities Planned
Committees were appointed at the American Legion meeting to plan Memorial Day events featuring parade, cemetery ceremonies, veteran graves decorating, and a short program. A public speaker is being sought for the parade. The Legion will host a banquet and motion picture showing for ex service parents that evening. McNicholas Low Bid On Road Job For Cloverland Trail Rebuilding John E. McNicholas of Marenisco was the low bidder among 14 for Cloverland Trail reconstruction at $80,529.36, under county road commission review. Green Bay firm bid $104,169.79 highest. State highway department may accept McNicholas bid. Concrete road work on M-12 Ironwood estimated at $50,000. bids to be invited soon.

Rat Bounty Brings 88 Captures for City Reward
A total of 88 rats were turned into the city clerk for bounty by Thursday noon. Each rat earns 15 cents for the party presenting evidence that it was captured and killed in Wakefield. Citizens lined up at City Hall within hours of the bounty announcement by the Advocate commission. Mine Valuation Hearing Monday By the state tax commission, a public hearing at the courthouse in Bessemer will review mining property valuations in the county. The meeting is expected to be among the year’s most important tax sessions. Tentative numbers show mining company real estate lower, personal property higher in several cases. City To Purchase Scale The commission approved a motion to seek quotations for 15 ton scales as part of a weighing ordinance. Location undecided, likely near City Hall for constant operator oversight. Harold Spross and Rosswell Miners visited friends in Ishpeming last Sunday.

FREAK ACCIDENT FATAL TO MINER AT WAKEFIELD IRON CO
A mining blast at Wakefield Iron Co near Plymouth caused the death of Steve Gulan a new Plymouth Mining Co employee. Despite warnings he was struck by a two pound rock fragment and died before aid could arrive. An inquest found death by accident no fault by workers or companies. The incident marks the first Plymouth pit fatal in five years. Ole Strom returns to Brandt lumber after a holiday injury. Mrs F B Dick of Ashland visited with her daughter. Abe Mathews of Pickands Mather Co visited Duluth on business.
