The Lincoln Saga of New Salem and Early Illinois
The fragment chronicles Abe Lincoln’s move to Springfield, the New Salem era, and the Panic of 1837 era. It follows Samson Kelso and family, Harry Needles, and local figures, detailing debts, marriages, and the era’s hard times amid political ascent and personal trials. It notes Lincoln sharing rooms with Joshua Speed, settling in the village, and the wider impact of financial ruin on the community.
