Recruits depart county for Esconaba to enlist in Uncle Sam
A large turnout in Ironwood Bessemer Wakefield and surrounding towns saw 62 volunteers head Thursday to Esconaba and Milwaukee for naval and army service. Wakefield sent nine men from the village while Ironwood and Hurley crews joined the march. Remarks about Italian youths were denounced as unjust. A letter from Lieut McNeal urged local recruiters to forward qualified applicants ages 18 to 40 with good health and English ability, offering a $500 reward per accepted recruit.
