The Wahpeton Citizens Reserve voted to stage a public Fourth of July event to fund entertainments for draft men. Committees led by McClintock Wilson and W. W. Thomas will handle arrangements and publicity as the city aims to mark liberty amid wartime.

Hail Storm Wipes Swath Through County

A violent hail storm with stones the size of hen eggs carved a two mile wide path across the southern county late Wednesday. It began near Star Lake five miles west of Wyndmere, followed the N P railroad, and joined a advancing NW storm near Barney before veering southeast. Crops suffered severe damage with rye wiped out and other grains beaten down. farmers hope for at least a partial half crop if weather improves.

German Alien Women Must Register Next Week

German alien females aged 14 and up residing in the United States must register from Monday, June 17 to Wednesday, June 26 at 8 PM. Registration in cities of 5000+ goes at police stations, smaller towns at the post office. includes German wives of naturalized men or those divorced or widowed, and natives of Austria are exempt. In Wahpeton, city residents register at the post office, rurals through that office. Miss Mary Pahl visited Mrs. W. F. Eekes and Miss Kate Pahl on Sunday.

Opera benefit concert inspires Red Cross support

Peton and surrounding towns attended a two hour opera house benefit at the Red Cross concert featuring Mrs Irving J Cross assisted by Mrs Mandanita E Stephens from Fargo College Music Conservatory. Cross played classical piano solos while Stephens sang soprano numbers and both earned praise for touch, execution, and encore selections. Proceeds totaled 150 dollars donated to the Red Cross.

In a wartime letter from Walpeton, Mrs. W. B. Lauder describes joining the Red Cross as a nurse. She writes from an improvised hospital near the Marne front caring for Allied wounded, with facilities large enough for 500 to 600 patients. She notes English and French patients receive care, while African soldiers are treated with the same consideration as white soldiers.

Rail fares advance to 3 cents Monday

Director General McAdoo issued an order raising railroad rates across the United States to reflect higher wages and fuel costs. The new passenger and freight rates, including 3.5 cents per mile for standard sleeping and parlor cars, are expected to boost railroad revenues by hundreds of millions of dollars in the next cycle. The freight rate increase takes effect June 25 and the passenger fare increase began Monday.
