A roundup of local appointments visits and health updates. Ella Jones is seriously ill. Miss Imogene Rogers visits Reno and Sparks. Miss Kate Paine relocates to Sparks. Ed Donelin heads to Reno. Rev. Le Bellam returns from Sparks. Mrs. J W Bement moves to Sparks. Also reported are travels of Mr and Mrs Sanford and son Tom, Mr Moe's land reclaim plan, and various residents visiting Reno Sparks Fallon and Olinghouse.
Thieves burglarized the Slip mill of the Springfield- Nevada Mining Company after 11 PM Tuesday, stealing between 300 and 400 dollars worth of amalgam. The pockets in the two upper mills were robbed, doors forced but plates left untouched.
A body washed up in an irrigation ditch 200 yards below the old reduction works near Reno is identified as a 35 year old man. An Italian laborer found the corpse which shows a head bruise suggesting murder. He wore kalka parts a jumper and coarse shoes and had about $12 in his pocket with a stopped watch at 3 30. The body had been in water about two weeks and was not badly decomposed.
Contractors and sub-contractors report strong progress as ground is turned and men stay with the work. Stone Co. completed their contract and the government accepted it last Friday. Foreman Hathaway moves the steam shovel to the track for California bound shipment. Mr. Hathaway and Mr. Price’s Division push toward completion by the 15th of next month with about 1000 men employed. Concreting advances under Baker’s supervision, rock crusher erected, and tunnel work near completion. A Baglan camp excavator breakdown caused a brief lay-off, now repaired. Colonel Huston leaves for Portland, Oregon, noting profits despite predictions of losses. Ditch completion expected and water flow hoped for next spring. Mrs Irene Younghans 33, wife of Fred Younghans, killed herself in Sparks during a temporary nursing absence. She had typhoid fever two weeks, shown improvement, then fired a pistol at her temple while alone with a nurse away briefly. She leaves a husband three children and mother. funeral planned in Sparks tomorrow.
W S Beard is praised as the fairest assessor Washoe County has had. He met residents personally and acted to aid Wadsworth during distress, earning commendation from citizens. Beard’s in office promise continues to ensure just treatment and broad local support.
The Republican Party nominates County Clerk W A Fogg to succeed himself. Voters should elect him by a large majority due to his careful and efficient service, courteous conduct, and attentive regard for public needs. He is popular and widely respected.
Present incumbent Coroner C. Updike, a county pioneer, runs as Democratic Silver candidate. He has an excellent record and broad esteem, having been elected before and hoping for a larger majority.
Episcopal services will be held Sunday morning at Union Church at 11 o'clock led by Rev. T. L. Bellam who serves as rector.
Fred Schours reports a new find on the Schours claim half a mile from Derby Station. A 50 foot shaft on the southerly running ledge reveals a 6 foot wide vein with free gold and a 1 inch vein near the wall worth 525,000 per ton. Schours left for San Francisco to attract capital for large scale development.
The Goldfield camp attracts investors from America, British Columbia, and Europe as Tonopah and Nevada rise in prominence. Reports show high ore values in multiple shafts and leases with profits from milling ore, crosscuts, and new discoveries, while shares soar from $60 to $2000 and large returns appear on Jumbo and Zinn leases.
