Madison Cooper, famed author of Sironia Texas, writes a new novel set in a different part of Texas. The book, to be published in September, will run about 325 pages with a price of 3.50, and features a distinctive bowlegged blonde as a character.

Senator Lyndon Johnson urged approval of a higher minimum wage and a larger public housing program. He said both aims may reach the Senate next week, though the House has not acted on either.
Waco police seek a man wearing new size SD shoes after a hat was dropped off for rework at R. E. Cox Company. A thief took a new pair of shoes missing while an old pair of the same size was left in the stockroom. L. R. Barton of 3425 Castle Drive reported the incident Saturday.
The U S Army Corps of Engineers plans over ten million dollars in projects across Central Texas. At James Connally AFB Waco Fort Hood Gray AFB and Belton Dam work includes a multimillion housing project in Fort Hood with 212 duplex units and a Wherry Housing plan for 625 single units. Bids in Fort Worth open June 16 with 420 days for completion.
The Texas State Board of Education asked Commissioner J. W. Edgar to study desegregation in Texas schools and formed a committee to assist. The move followed Cecil Morgan of Fort Worth urging action within constitutional authority. Governor Shivers opposed a special session on integration, and the board agreed more study is needed.
County tax board hearings on assessments against 12 incorporated banks may test the county valuation system. Banks defend 25 percent capital stock base while the county seeks to uphold a 50 percent basis. Court notices set June 21 for banks to contest the county action.
Col. W. H. Sadler 67 retired army officer and Coryell County Democratic chairman dies after weeks of illness. Funeral at First Methodist Church in Gatesville at 2 30 p m Sunday with Rev. W H Dickinson of Dallas officiating. Burial in Masonic Cemetery. He helped organize Gatesville's first National Guard Company in 1917 and served in World War I in France.
Washington reports the top level talks among the four powers will convene in Geneva starting July 18 after the United States dropped objections. Officials say a note will be sent to Moscow to formalize the proposal and seek Russian agreement, with Eisenhower and Dulles previously preferring Lausanne or Stockholm.
In Whitewright Texas, J P Darwin 61 a rural mail carrier, owns Davy Crockett s 14 pound muzzle loader known as Old Betsy. After years hidden, the rifle is now to be given to the Daughters of the Texas Revolution for display at the Alamo.
A line of storms stretched from Minnesota to Del Rio triggering tornadoes in Kansas and wind events in Brady and Brownwood. Central Texas saw up to 1.5 inches of rain with Meredian the heaviest at 1.5 inches described as a slow soaking. Valley Mills Gatesville and Clifton near 1 inch each. Hamilton .85 inches Killeen Belton .5 inch Temple .39 Waco .25 Measured winds near Gray AFB reached 58 mph. No hail reported. Forecast calls for more fallen trees and lines Sunday. Scattered thundershowers swept the Waco area as a storm hit Brady in West Texas Saturday night. Winds with tornado like power damaged four buildings, toppled utility lines, and uprooted trees. The 6 30 p m strike time left streets blocked and initial tornado reports were cancelled. A call for aid went to surrounding communities.
Dallas Tran sit Co. workers voted to accept a 9 cent raise retroactive to June 1 and an additional 5 cent raise next year if revenue reaches 47 cents per mile by May 31, 1956. The city prepared for heavy downtown traffic and parking issues as the strike was cancelled by a 6 to 1 vote.
USC professors plan to skip commencement if Gov. Allan Shivers speaks. Dr. Russell Caldwell says 136 faculty signed a petition urging replacement of Shivers while Student Senate urged reconsideration. President Fagg declined. The faculty protest cites concerns over tolerance and integrity.
Detroit June 4 Ford Motor Co rejected a union proposal to arbitrate how a 55 million job security fund would be spent. Ford said the demand was unreasonable and threatened disruption if a strike occurred after midnight Sunday. Bugas, Ford vice president, said talks could continue at the bargaining table but arbitration is blocked. The fund aims to supplement unemployment benefits during layoffs with up to 80 percent of take home pay for 52 weeks, while Ford offered 60 to 65 percent for 26 weeks. The union targets Ford as a key auto industry foe and GM talks continue past Ford's strike deadline.

Austin June 4 The Texas Legislature nears final adjournment with a 1.2 billion dollar spending bill and an 98 million dollar tax bill approved. Gov. Allan Shivers gets much of his agenda from highway improvements to tighter labor laws as lawmakers plan a Tuesday House exit and a Senate decision on timing. The 1.2 billion budget and 0.98 billion tax plan balance the budget and fund road work with a penny per pack cigarette tax and a 1 cent per gallon fuel tax increase.
Vienna June 4 UP Authorities returning from Communist captivity report many Americans in Russia’s slave camps, including at least four U S airmen. Names identified are John Turbin and John Hopkins, with details on their roles and location. Reports also recount mass riots at Camp Resta and suspected executions, plus long imprisonment of central European detainees.
