Dorothy McKennon Collins wife of Col Robert Collins James Connally AFB commander died at 53 after a traffic accident Monday. Waco mourns as the colonel praised as one of the best in town. The report also notes local reactions and a string of brief community items.
Dr. Walter Ford spoke at the Waco Health Committee meeting about Bard disease remedies. He noted new drugs have aided cures but hospitals still face long waiting lists.
McLennan County Sheriff Maxey orders no lawyers allowed inside the jail proper. Attorneys may meet with prisoners only in a designated upstairs consultation room or downstairs with the inmate brought to the jail floor, ensuring constitutional access while preventing jailhouse influence.
Goodwill Industries of Waco marked four years of service with jobs training and rehabilitation for 120 handicapped workers who earned about 60000 in wages. The open house at 120 North Fourth Street featured guests from news and industry outlets and Air Force press services as Everton Dibb led reporters through the store and warehouse where disabled workers repair and rework discarded items for resale.
The Waco Humane Society will host its annual Pet Show at Sul Ross Park on Saturday at 1 30 pm. with 31 classifications for dogs cats birds birdhouses poultry and other pets. Prizes awarded for first second and third place in each class.
Waco police issued 330 moving traffic tickets in May 1958, up from 117 in the same month last year. Auto collisions total 56 to date, five more than the prior year period. Parking tickets reached 148, compared with 53 in 1957.
Mexia Jackson, a Black man, was found guilty of murdering Tommy Taylor in 54th district court. He received a 45 year sentence after the jury verdict. the appeal was withdrawn and he departed for Huntsville. Defense lawyers signaled a motion for a new trial as precaution.
McLennan County Red Cross Chapter announces an open house at 525 North Eighteenth Street from 2 to 4 30 p m on Sunday May 17. B Robertson chairman says displays will cover all services from blood center to Junior Red Cross and volunteers are completing arrangements. Immediate after the open house the 43rd annual meeting will elect officers and directors.
A Newro boy Earlie Lee 28 faced sentencing in the 4th district court after a confession dispute. District Attorney Barney Walker and Judge D W Bartlett argued over plea terms as Lee claimed he loaned his accomplices his car. Lee was sent to the county jail on old bonds awaiting likely jury trial on a not guilty plea. Authorities later discussed concurrent sentences for burglaries. others named include Robert Spratt 19 Arthur Lee Laws 19 Chop Chop Laws 19 and Mexia Jackson, with Huntsville transfers and a 45 year sentence for Jackson.
Bishop William C. Martin of the Dallas Fort Worth Area Methodist Church will preach at the Sunday evening service at First Methodist Church at 7 30 P M. He is past president of the National Council of Churches and a World Council of Churches director. The Methodist Home choir directed by H L McDowell will sing during the service.
Police reported early anti litter violations in East Waco with several youths questioned. Three 15 year olds were released after ruling them uninvolved. An 18 year old man was arrested then released. A 15 year old Negro youth admitted guilt and was released after probation officer intervention.
Lawyers of the 10th Supreme Judicial District and Bell County invited to a one day legal institute and banquet in Waco on Friday May 15. The event is sponsored by the local Bar Baylor University Law School and the State Bar of Texas with registration at 9 30 a m. Lecturers include Joe Stephens Roy Ledbetter W C Harvin and Fred Parks speaking on wills trusts land disputes personal injury and medical witness examination.
Judge Vie Hall discharged a county court at law jury Wednesday after the panel hung on a liquor violation charge. Defendant Lula Dobbs of 1200 Leabue Street Nebro was accused of possessing whiskey for sale in a dry area and was prosecuted by D A Rook Edwards on the liquor agents complaint.
