Cheryl Wilburn 18 of Houston wins Texas title in Cleburne and earns chance to represent state at Miss Universe July 10 22 in Miami Beach Florida. She is 5 5 1 2, 120 pounds, 35 25 36, studying at the University of Houston to become a psychologist.
The Fort Worth District Corps of Engineers released figures showing Lake Whitney as the state's top lake with 1,331,600 visitors. Lake Lavon followed with 1,108,000 as the Citizen devotes eight pages to Waco area coverage.
Over 1 000 spectators and a swarm of radio TV and newspaper reporters filled Cleburne for the Miss Universe state finals which Waco had declined to host. Cheryl Wilburn of Houston won, represented by the LaPorte Bay Shores Chamber of Commerce, with 14 regional entrants. The event boosted local publicity and some downtown stores benefited, one entrant reportedly spending 56 dollars on clothing.
