The Central Texas Methodist Laymen's Retreat at Glen Lake drew 830 registered attendees, the largest yet. Waco churches accounted for about 73 registrants amid heat heavy sessions, crowd spillover, and crowded quarters.

The eight Russians, led by ministers and inspectors, were hosted by Texas A&M and State Department officials and included translators and a cameraman. They then departed from Waco for San Angelo to view sheep.
The Texas Junior Chamber of Commerce endorses Amend ment Number One to be voted on November 4. A 1956 state convention resolution supports regular odd year legislative sessions from 1959 and regular budgetary sessions from 1960 with limited per diem and set salaries including a $7,500 annual salary for legislators. The lieutenant governor and speaker would have a temporary Capitol residence during their terms.
Elmer Bramlett chief criminal deputy sheriff helped clear a spate of safe burglaries. Detectives Guy Akard and Stanley Turner accompanied Bramlett to Ramsey state penitentiary farm, where Oscar Rose confessed to all burglary activities. Other accused include Robert Quincy Day Jack Thomas Jackson and Harvey Lee Jones.
John Pinto of Square barber corrects a misquote in Observation regarding distance from his shop to National City Bank. The piece should note that the total blocks traveled due to one way streets was about 14, not the distance stated.
Regular meeting of Legion Post 440 and Auxiliary will be held at the Club House 2412 Speight on Tuesday August 19 at 8 o'clock. Texas rainfall was below normal in seven of eight years from 1947 to 1954.
J O Musick of the Texas Safety Association urged public support for Share the Road, a joint effort with the National Safety Council. He said superhighway driving differs from ordinary driving due to higher permissible speeds and stressed one misstep can lead to a serious accident.
D. T. Hicks Jr. takes over as vice president in charge of public relations at First National Bank beginning September 1, succeeding Jim Flynn who moved to the Brazos River Authority. Hicks, 54, a Waco pioneer family member and former mayor, is active in Rotary, Chamber, United Fund, and local nonprofits. He is a Baylor alum, WWII veteran, and heads Star Finance Oasis Water and partners in Hicks & Boyd Insurance. He and Mary Frances Neil have two children and reside at 3013 Cumberland.
The new librarian and consultant held conferences over the weekend in Waco. The city commission meets today. It is possible these library specialists will meet informally with the commissioners. Henington reports for duty October 1st as the first to hold the position. He holds a Columbia Master’s and a BA from Houston University and is with the Dallas library now.
The highest temperature ever recorded in Texas occurred at Seymour on August 12, 1936, reaching 120 degrees Fahrenheit. The extreme heat stands as the state’s all time high.
Judge D. W. Bartlett of the 54th district court presided in his hospital room at Providence. He held criminal trials Thursday revoking probation for Eugene Mahan for drinking too much and granting Dexter Peacock five years probation. All court officials were present.
Pvt Jack N Reece son of Royal V Reece Route 3 Waco Texas has been assigned to the 46th Artillery Group at Fort Sill Oklahoma.
Mayor Sam Johnson says Beverly Hills will strictly enforce a dog ordinance requiring all dogs penned or tied on owners premises and vaccinated with current tags. A dog catcher will be in the vicinity to pick up stray dogs in the near future.
