Waco's Cactus Kid and Caravan of Western Stars rose to fame at Seattle World's Fair on the Diamond Horseshoe show. The act was extended from 3 days to 14 due to sold out crowds, with frequent visits from Pat Brady and Roy Rogers era acts. After touring Idaho, Montana, and the Dakotas they head home for a vacation around August 15 before heading to the East Coast for TV and personal appearances.
The State Highway Commission awarded 1.8 miles of TH 35 construction in McLennan County to a Dallas firm after the Austin bid. Aus tin Bridge Co. Worth Coast Co. and Stimson Construction Co. bid $1,852.19. Work from 0.3 mile south of Waco to 26th Street in Waco will take 320 days under J. H. Aiken and James P. Ledbetter supervision.
On a Tuesday vote the city council asked the Civil Service board to lower police applicant weight to at least 150 pounds. City officials said several capable men were rejected by only a few pounds, while firemen meet the current standard.
Five members of the Waco council approved allowing a left turn slot on Bosque Boulevard at Edmond Street to aid Brookview merchants led by S. J. Guthrie. Mayor Stanton Brown and City Manager Terrell Blodgett opposed citing dangerous traffic impact and required engineering plans before work.
Jim Phipps told the Citizen that Chapel Hill cemetery associates caused the Corps of Engineers to halt his burial contract last week. He says a federal inspector and a $94,471 low bid for Speegleville cemetery removal were approved. work to complete by October 14 under Col Paul West.
La Nelle Gallant a Baylor University sophomore appears in Fort Worth as Miss Waco at the Miss Texas Pageant. The four day event began Wednesday at Will Rogers Coliseum with Linda Loftis of last year to crown the new queen. Miss America will attend.
Traffic engineer Tommy Nuckols says the final section between Bosque Blvd and Waco Drive is nearing completion and the one way on 17th and 18th streets should reopen in about a month.
The Weco city council refused to place ex policeman T J Richey on the disability pension roll after Attorney Tom Moore Jr requested it. The decision allows Moore to sue to force pension payments during Richey’s disability. Richey was injured in a police car accident and later shot and seriously wounded Officer Hobart Howell, who remains hospitalized. Several doctors backed Richey’s disability claim.
Representatives from about 28 Central Texas newspapers radio and TV stations attend the Heart of Texas Fair kickoff party at the Holiday Inn. The event features entertainment a buffet supper and updates from Fair president Harry Provence and manager Leon Collens as the rodeo opens in less than two months with Rex Allen as star.

Lone Star Gas Co opens its remodeled 901 Washington Street office in Waco with an open house on Thursday August 2 from 2 to 6 pm. George Gott notes tours, free gas lights for registrants, and home economists serving refreshments.
City council delays action on buying 4.7 acre site behind Mountainview Elementary owned by R Bishop. Parks board backs the rear school property as best option, but council calls the price exorbitant. The 68th and Tennyson park is officially named the J C park by the council though commonly known as the J C park.
The south side of Franklin Avenue from 18th Street to the west is open for traffic while the north side remains closed for drainage culvert installation to relieve South 23rd Street overflow and support flood relief in south Waco.
