William Archie Litte becomes Purchasing Agent effective August 16, replacing Smith, with duties to procure all municipal supplies and services. Smith, 36, a Baylor graduate and Marine veteran, previously served the city after working for Waco Chevrolet and KWTX Radio. Litte, 43, a Baylor graduate and WWII Air Force veteran, led Waco ISD purchasing since 1956.
Letter from G. C. Thomsen to the Waco Citizen questions a July 24 article about truck drivers using barbiturates to stay awake. He asserts barbiturates are sleep drugs and that amphetamines, benzodiazepines, and caffeine are more common wakeful aids. he claims none are narcotics or restricted and are easily obtainable.
Army Engineers order a halt to Jim Phipps contract as relatives and locals protest desecration during removal of remains from Speegleville cemetery to be relocated by Lake Waco. Allegations include opened graves, partial bone removal, and bodies stored in a garage near Highway Six while plans for reburial are debated.
McLennan county and Waco lag in the polio mass immunization drive while others move ahead. A local newspaper campaign urges action now with vaccine blanks appearing in daily papers. McLennan county plans a September start but advocates say begin today to save lives.
Richard W. Evans Jr. of Chagrin Falls Ohio received the First Investiture of Chivalry from the Chagrin Valley Chapter Order of DeMolay for his years of service as counselor. He is married to Saundra Behl, a former Wacoan.
July 1 marks the 25th anniversary of the United States Air Weather Service formed from the transfer of 40 weather stations from the Army Signal Corps in 1937. AWS now includes 11,000+ personnel and 400 weather stations worldwide, with eight wings and 28 squadrons providing 24/7 weather support to U S Air Force and Army units. At Twelfth Air Force Headquarters the 25th Weather Squadron under Colonel George A Williamson supplies local and theater weather data to aid global TAC force movements.
Animals and plants of forest plains desert and seashore will take the spotlight in the Agriculture Show at the 1962 State Fair of Texas in Dallas. The exhibit will tell the complete story of Texas wildlife and game with daily displays during October 6 through 21.

The Heritage Society may acquire the old First Methodist church at South Std and Jackson to preserve a historic Waco landmark. Judge Charles Koehne forfeited a $2,500 bond in the 54th district court to compel the return of George Curry a Negro man held for extradition. G P Medearis and Horace Howard stood as sureties. September 1 is set to bring the defendant to court in Mobile Alabama.
