Whisky, Murder, and the Drunkard’s Excuse in Des Moines

A Des Moines druggist M B Davis pled guilty to murder in the second degree after shooting his wife while intoxicated, and wounding the attending physician. The wife died days later leaving an infant. Davis was sentenced to 18 years at Fort Madison prison. The piece condemns whisky as a coward and ruinous force, framing the tragedy as a consequence of drink rather than the man. It contrasts Davis’s character when sober with the crime, and cites a German proverb on hope amidst disappointment. The narrative blends moralizing commentary with brief humor items on media quips.
