Sweet clover praised for pasture by Mason City farmer
William McArthur of Mason City reports using only sweet clover for pasture. He kept 45 steers and 45 hogs on 14 acres all summer with abundant pasture, while a neighbor fed 80 steers on 27 acres. Experts advise stocking to prevent overgrowth, mixed grazing with hogs, seed inoculation, soil testing, and lime if needed. McArthur notes 35 acres but plans to plow some back due to stock limitations, calling sweet clover a soil builder that prepares land for a big corn crop.
