A Fish Story of Grasshopper Days at Spirit Lake

A humorous historic reminiscence recounts the grasshopper plagues that devastated farms near Spirit Lake in the 1870s. It details Rev William Preston and Uncle Billy Helms uniting to aid a struggling Methodist family, organizing a fish relief drive that brought in hundreds of pounds of fish from West Okoboji shacks, aided by merchant A M Johnson. The tale links this mercy to the later work of Rev E J Helms in Boston and notes general 19th century hardship.
