Emergency hay crop plan for June sowing
An emergency hay crop is advised as the year’s harvest likely below normal. Professor F G Churchill of the Extension Service recommends soy beans and Sudan grass as excellent emergency options. Soy beans can be planted any time in June on well prepared seed bed for fair hay yield. inoculation is needed on ground with no prior soy cultivation, especially low fertility. The Peking variety is best for hay in Iowa, with Midwest or Manchu suitable for late sowing. Sudan grass can be sown any time in June on well prepared ground using 15 to 20 pounds per acre broadcast.

Apple Blotch Spray Instructions for Varieties Treatment
Apply immediately from June 20 to 80 on Northwestern Grafting varieties as ordinary orchard sprays fail against apple blotch. Use lime sulfur or Bordo with arsenate of lead now to protect susceptible varieties from this fungal disease. Do not confuse with sooty blotch which appears later. For the spray, use 3-3-50 homemade mix.
Bordo Mixture Proportions for Lime Sulfur and Lead Arsenate
The guidance specifies Bordo or equivalent mixtures using about 4% commercial lime sulfur or about 2 lb dry lime sulfur per 50 gallons of water. For either mix, add one th of arsenate of lead to each 50 gallons of the solution.
