Militia of Iowa in 1846 Era Admitted to Union
In 1846 Iowa transitioned from a territory to statehood on December 28. Population grew from 10 531 in 1886 to 102 388 in 1846 nearly tenfold in ten years. An Iowa Historical Society article notes elaborate provisions for militia organization and discipline, with rendezvous by companies twice yearly for martial drills, though enforcement remained likely perfunctory.
