Money Instead of Merchandise for Soldiers
The War Department rewrote shipment rules allowing majors and higher officers to approve parcels sent to expeditionary forces, not just company commanders. A 5,000-sack review found most items sent were unnecessary, totaling 500,000 pounds weekly. Relatives are urged to send money instead, to buy items in France via the quartermaster corps store at lower prices. Tobacco is provided as rations.
