Device to slow drivers at rail crossings gains praise
A Des Moines inventor G C Toulouse proposes metal posts on each side of a track with red toppers to reflect headlights. Drivers must thread between posts, slowing down and giving sight lines to check tracks. Posts are removable and hinged to avoid damage. The plan claims cheaper installation and safer crossings.

Orange rust is harming small fruit plants in Iowa. Disease appears as small orange spots on leaves, overwinters in cane canes, and strikes new foliage in spring, as D R Porter of the extension service at Iowa State College notes based on daily received specimens.

Growers Urged to Dig Out Infected Bushes and Burn
Since spraying will not cure the infected plant, the only measure left is to dig out the bush and burn it. It is wise for all growers of small fruits to spray healthy bushes as a preventive. The Bordeaux mixture should be applied at two week intervals until the danger of infection passes. Sprouts from former infected spots should be dug up and burned.
