Butter vs Oleomargarine Deflation Threat to Farmers
A seasoned observer argues butter price declines mirror oleomargarine use, estimating 60 percent of dairy deflation from oleo imports and domestic consumption. The piece links Philippine ingredient sources, tariff critique, and the potential $150 million annual farmer loss, warning of a $88 million annual oleo cost and future doubling if trends continue.
Oleo Use in Iowa Draws Farmer Oil and Butter Debate
In Iowa oleo consumption is widespread with estimates of about 10 million pounds used yearly. Merchants keep most profits, sending balance out of state as Iowa lacks oleo manufacturing. Six grocers report varying splits between oleo and butter, while six estimate a near even mix. The author argues oleo harms farmers and children and hints at price impacts from chain-store promotions. Next week’s piece promises more on effects and a Welcome Minnesota store’s two pounds for 13 cents offer.
