Auto Sales Ban Costs Iowa 1.5 Million Dollars
Comptroller Fred C. Porter in Des Moines warned the state treasury will lose about 1.5 million dollars due to the ban on new car sales. The 2 percent use tax on new car sales produced 1.666 million in 1947 and has fallen as car purchases dropped. The use tax funds general accounts but can aid homestead tax credits if needed. Porter notes he has funds to cover full homestead payments despite the reduced car use tax. The tax also applies to out of state purchases for Iowa use, and the state expects 500,000 to 750,000 in back taxes from mail order companies after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling.
