Legion Meeting Reaches Quota and Carnival Set

The American Legion reports strong attendance at last Tuesday’s meeting and urges ex service men to join. A card party hosted by the Auxiliary drew fifteen tables and good fun. The group schedules Legion business on the first Tuesday and social meetings on the third Tuesday monthly, with a Carnival on March 2 promising a big event.

County wide Republican caucuses selected delegates across three wards for the upcoming County Republican convention at the Estherville Court House on Saturday February 25. R J Ridley chaired the first ward with B F Westbrook as secretary. second ward was chaired by Wm S Johnston with Geo Lorimer Jr as secretary. third ward presided by J C Lilley with W G Gordon as secretary. Delegates listed per ward include numerous residents and local party officials. first ward names several pairs for next two years on the county central committee if elected.

Glen Brown held a highly successful sale last Monday, totaling about 3500 dollars. Sows averaged 42 dollars, fall pigs 8 dollars, one span of mules 200 dollars, horses up to 171 dollars, cows to 95 dollars. Corn brought 50 cents per measure, machinery sold well, a corn elevator 141 dollars, binder 67 dollars, chickens averaged 91 cents with roosters at 1.20.

Helgason to represent us at special session

In a Monday special election in Emmet County E O Helgason of Armstrong won a large majority to fill the unexpired term of the late R B Crone. Helgason ran unopposed on the Republican ticket as Democrats had no candidate with scattered write ins noted in some precincts. Final results by locality show strong support in Estherville Lincoln Ellsworth Emmet Swan Lake Armstrong High Lake Twelve Mile Lake Wallingford and other townships with varying counts.

Local Debate Team Stopped in Round Two

Estherville High School was stopped in the second round of the district debate. The negative team, Paul and Alice Gray, defeated Algona two to one by judges. The affirmative team, Robert Hansen and Anita Houltshouser, faced strong Spencer opposition as Alpena sent Clela Cooper and Vaughn Rising. In the first round, the state district saw the affirmative beat Emmetsburg and the negative beat Ruthven.

Des Moines hosts Butter and Egg Convention attendees

Division Freight Agent A A Halleck and Mrs Halleck attended as Rock Island representatives at the Iowa Wholesale Egg Butter and Poultry dealers association meeting in Des Moines. Young Woman Injured As Car Goes Off Grade

Mrs. Lawrence Gage was seriously injured and her husband bruised when their Chevrolet coach skidded on ice in high winds four miles south of Petersburg. The car rolled three times after leaving the road, damaged badly. Mrs. Gage was taken to Birney hospital with a cracked collarbone and serious bruises. they had been visiting her mother in Estherville and were returning home near the state line.

Rapid progress on remodeling the H Oransky store to house a new furniture stock. Fixtures moved reorganizing ready to wear and millinery and children toward the rear, with a balcony over fitting rooms. Second floor redecorated for stock arriving by Saturday, while receiving room and elevator work advances.

Mayor of Graettinger Dies Suddenly at 38

Dr L J Lindsey mayor of Graettinger died Friday of pneumonia at a local hospital after an operation for appendicitis. He served on the town council and school board and was well known in the community. He leaves a wife and one child. Mr and Mrs Byron Weir of Cedar Rapids arrived here Tuesday.

Trousdale Takes Cedar Rapids Majestic Theater Lead

Boyd B Trousdale well known here as head of a theatrical company and former Estherville boy has taken over management of the Majestic Theater in Cedar Rapids with a February 19 reopening. The theater will host legitimate stage productions by well known stock companies after closure since January 14 when Frank Amusement company of Waterloo was placed in receivership.

Morgan youth sets world looping record in 515 loops

Sets New Loop Gene Shank, a former Pocahontas boy known to Estherville residents, recently set a world looping record by executing 515 consecutive loops between 2 05 and 4 30 pm on February 4. He appeared none the worse for the effort.

The Estherville Checker club defeated Spirit Lake 127 to 89 last Wednesday evening at Spirit Lake. County Tourney Set At Local High School Gym

Four teams Ringsted Dolliver Armstrong and Estherville will compete in a two day county tournament at the local high school gym. First round Friday at 3 pm features Armstrong versus Dolliver and Estherville versus Ringsted. Second round Friday evening, and Saturday 2 pm final rounds, with Arm strong meeting Ringsted and Dolliver meeting Estherville. Goldfield official J E Thomas to referee. Prizes include a 15 inch silver cup for the winners a six inch cup for sportsmanship and a gold medal for the top sportsman and playing ability. An all tournament team to be selected.

H J Craig Selected Secretary for Chamber of Commerce

H J Craig, formerly local J C Penny manager and Maurice Doyle Post American Legion commander, was elected secretary of the Chamber of Commerce for the year ending May. J A Smith resigns after two years to run the Maytag Agency for Emmet County. Craig praised for his Legion leadership and social skills promising to benefit the C of C.

Scout Play Is Well Received at Estherville High

The Wallingford Boy Scout Troop presented a Thursday evening play to Estherville High School Auditorium audiences that was well received though sparsely attended. The boys showed strong acting and a high moral, supported by the DeViney stringed orchestra. Richard Goss received a merit kit for efficiency between acts from H. J. Craig, commander of the local legion post. Mr and Mrs Henry Graat and son Frederick arrived in Estherville from California by auto via St Louis, visiting relatives in recent months.

In a district court hearing and sale, Ralph Oehrlein purchased the StateBank building for 12000 after bids from Henry Graaf and Henry Wellendorff. Oehrlein indicated the purchase was for investment and he has not decided whether to occupy a room or rent to others.

Prominent Maple Hill Farmer Dies After Illness

Hans R. Hansen of Swan Lake township dies at 45 after a six month illness from a brain tumor. Born May 15, 1882 in Skouby, he immigrated to the United States in 1903, lived near Ringsted then Maple Hill, married Anna Semidt in 1906, and left a wife and five living children. Funeral at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ringsted.
