Careful planting to save young orchards this spring
C E Nichols of Iowa State College urges careful planting to prevent losses in new orchards. He notes common mistakes include not cutting back tree tops. when dug from the nursery two thirds of roots are removed, so 60 to 75 percent of the top should be cut to restore root to top balance. Larger roots should be shortened and damaged roots removed. Dig the hole large enough for natural root spread.

Deep enough so the tree when planted will be about two inches lower than nursery height. Mix manure with soil sparingly and away from the trunk. Do not heap manure near or under the tree as it may damage water supply. Use top soil around the roots and stamp firmly. Watering not needed if ground remains moist.
