World renowned surgeon Dr. Robert Battey died Friday afternoon at his Rome home. He originated the Battey operation, built a famed southern sanitarium, served in the Confederate army, and led medical groups in Georgia. Born 1828 in Augusta, he studied at Pennsylvania and Jefferson, edited the Atlanta Medical Journal, and published widely on women’s surgery. He was revered as a martyr to his profession.

Christopher Gray, a longtime wholesale and retail dry goods merchant in Brooklyn and active in Savannah and Augusta, died at 75.
