Judge D J Ivey concluded testimony in the Cordele municipal election contest. 157 illegal votes were purged, 152 for Cutts and 5 for Scandrett. The case moves to Ordinary Hargrove for final decision, with Scandrett counsel including Hall Hill Jones Crum and Cutts team led by Graham Shippard. May or Scandrett appears likely.
Mrs Lena Smith Fields wife of Col 8 R Fields of Cordele died Friday at 2 am after a two week illness. She was twenty years old. She leaves a husband and a two week old baby girl. She died without tears, rational to the end, and planned the baby's upbringing. A Methodist and devout Christian she is mourned by family and friends. Interment was at the family burial ground six miles east of Cordele Saturday at 11 am. Revs J W Weston and E Culpepper led funeral services at Smyrna church near the cemetery.

A Wilcox County coroner's jury on January 15 1899 ruled Warren Faircloth died from heart failure after falling from his buggy the previous day near his home. The inquest noted no water in the lungs and included remarks from Dr Gammage and jurors Gammage Piland Braswell Nipper Holliday Downs and Coroner K O Conner. A mourning tribute closes the record.
A small wooden millinery store operated by Mrs. H. Melton on Cotton Avenue near Dr. C. T. Stovall was saved only by swift community effort when fire broke out last Friday. Fire nearly spread to adjacent shops and a bicycle shop, but all flames were extinguished. Melton carried $200 in stock insurance, while Stovall had no building insurance.
