No Negro In Congress Curiously Noted in Session

An Argonaut item notes that the current session lacks a Black member in Congress, a rarity except for a brief 1887–1889 period. It recalls J Willis Menard as the first colored member elected in 1868 and Herman Rh Revells as the first Black senator in 1870, with Blanche K Bruce also serving in the Senate. The Forty Fourth Congress (1875–77) is linked as a high point with eight Black members in both houses.
