Allen Fort son of James A Fort and Mary Fort born on a Stewart county farm near Lumpkin Georgia. He attended the University of Georgia, earned first honors, and later the AM degree. He practiced law in Americus from 1868, served in the Georgia General Assembly, backed railroad reforms, and helped shape the railroad commission. He was judge of the superior court of the southwestern circuit from 1882, railroad commissioner in 1901, and active in national railroad and interstate commerce matters. Fort married Floyd Hollis in 1876 and built a large family with devoted support from his wife.
